NM Public Land Elk Hunting

We offer a National Forest Draw for our New Mexico public land elk hunts. The Lincoln National Forest is a hot spot for trophy elk! There are three mountain ranges within the forest and a solid mix of forest types that make for a big game haven. New Mexico does not offer over-the-counter elk tags and the season dates vary based on the unit that is drawn and the tag that you have; please contact us with any questions about obtaining a tag for your hunt.

What to Expect on Your New Mexico Elk Hunt

Whether you're looking to use a bow, rifle, or muzzleloader to down a Rocky Mountain Elk, we have a hunt for you.

Bow Hunting Elk

Early archery season is still during the warm season, and bulls are quiet. They do a lot of sitting on water/wallows to keep cool and aren't doing much calling yet. Soon, bulls start bugling and they do a lot of calling setups - the rut is a "feeding frenzy". When you book a hunt with us, you can expect to do some spot & stalk, glassing, and calling bulls in.

Muzzleloader Hunting Elk

Once bow season shuts down, muzzleloader season opens up. You can plan on doing spot & stalk for these hunts as well. The bulls are still bugling, so practice your call! Our guides will have spent the bow season marking spots that they know the elk are moving through, so you'll have a good opportunity to see them move. Make sure you have all equipment needed for your muzzleloader hunt, you can find a recommended list of things to pack here.

Rifle Hunting Elk

The general elk hunting season typically opens in October (all New Mexico elk seasons vary based on tags, units, etc.). You might hear some elk calling at the beginning of the season, however, they will get quiet not too long after. This is when you get to put the work in! You can expect a lot of spot & stalk and glassing the beautiful landscape for traveling bulls.
